What is Child Dedication?
Child dedications are for babies and children. Baby dedications are not the same as infant baptism. Throughout the New Testament, the Bible teaches that baptism is a public expression of worship symbolizing the new life we have when we follow Jesus. In the Bible we see that Jesus’ parents dedicated him to the Lord (Luke 2:22–40), and he was later baptized as an adult (Matthew 3:16–17).
We understand that some churches practice “baptism of confirmation” for children. This ceremony is intended to be a commitment between the parents and God on the behalf of the child. The parents promise to raise their child in the faith until the child is old enough to make his or her own personal confession of Christ. This custom began about 300 years after the Bible was completed and is different from the biblical examples of new believers being baptized to publicly profess their faith in Jesus.
Our biblical example of child dedications is found in Luke 2:22-32, when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to be dedicated to God. Each child is a gift from God. As you dedicate them, you are "giving your children back to the Lord” and entrusting them to His care. Child Dedications are a time for Christian parents to commit to God, their family, and the rest of the church, that they will raise their children in a way that honors God.
What does a Child Dedication Signify?
A child dedication is actually the parents’ act of dedication and spiritual commitment to God concerning the upbringing of their child. This commitment involves the parent praying for the child, teaching the child from the Word of God, bringing the child to church and setting a Christlike example inside the home for the child.
What do Child dedications look like?
We have baby dedications during our 10:30am Sunday service. After our time of worship, we will ask the parent/s and children, as well as extended family members/God-Parents, if desired, to come and stand in front of the congregation. You will come forward at the time your child's name is announced and his/her photo is displayed on the screen. Then our pastor will ask for a verbal commitment from the parents, as well as the congregation, to be an example of godliness that the children can follow as they grow. He will ask the parents to commit to raising their child in the church and a knowledge of Jesus as their Savior and will ask the parents to commit to teaching the child the Word of God. He will then pray a prayer of blessing over the parents, the infant, and family members.
